Master Watershed Stewards are trained to work within their neighborhoods to address the problem of stormwater pollution coming from private property.  Most rain water flowing from roofs, driveways and other hard surfaces moves through drains and pipes to our creeks and rivers, and is not filtered or cleaned.   Master Watershed Stewards work at the community grass-roots level to introduce behaviors and projects that clean this polluted water on private properties.

The average small home dumps enough polluted stormwater into the nearest creek or river every year to fill nine full tanker trucks!

The Stormwater Utility Fee will go a long way to repairing polluted streams, but individual actions on each private property are essential for healthy waterways.

As of Spring 2013,  we have trained over 100 Watershed Stewards who now influence neighborhood behaviors for immediate results in pollution reduction.  Our program is the model for 3 other WSA programs in Maryland.

The Watershed Stewards Academy trains and supports Stewards as they:

  • Educate and lead their neighbors in actions toward cleaner water
  • Implement effective pollution-reducing projects
  • Change old habits within their neighborhoods that contribute to the problem

In 2012 alone Master Watershed Stewards:

  • Engaged 5,200 citizens through 167 presentations and RainScaping events
  • Planted over 4,500 native trees and plants
  • Installed 206 Rain Barrels
  • Created 9,000 square feet of RainScaping projects

The Watershed Stewards Academy is a 501c3 organization. We depend upon your donations to train more Stewards in more neighborhoods.

Ensure that your rain barrel is ready for the rain!  Direct your overflow hose away from your house and be sure your downspout is firmly in contact to the basket.  Take a moment to clear any debris from the screen.  Learn more about rain barrels or purchase one now
