Our Watershed

Anne Arundel County is home to over 500,000 people and 14,000 businesses. Everyone who lives, works and plays in our County belongs to a Watershed.

A watershed is an area of land that drains to a particular river, lake, bay or other body of water. We all live in a watershed: some are large (like the Chesapeake), while others are small (like your local stream or creek). Watersheds are sometimes called "basins" or "drainage basins." When it rains, all of the water that falls in a watershed, eventually winds up in the stream, river or Bay.

Just as states are divided into counties, watersheds are broken up into smaller segments called sub-watersheds. Anne Arundel County has 12 watersheds, and 354 sub-watersheds.
